It’s “Transcription Tuesday!”  Every Tuesday, I’ll be posting a transcription, either that I’ve done or that I’ve found online or that I get as a submission.  If you have any recommendations for the future, let me know!

This week’s transcription is Chris Potter’s “All The Things You Are.”

You can download the transcription here.

Dexter Gordon: Blue Note 1961-65

“Society Red” from Doin’ Allright (1961)

According to Jazz Wax, Blue Note founders Alred Lion and Francis Wolff wanted the first release, Doin’ Allright, to be a standards album, albeit with the stipulation there be one blues number “that can be enjoyed and played on jukeboxes.” The result was  ”Society Red,” which was one of the tenor’s nicknames (he had a lot of them, including “Long Tall Dexter,” “Sophisticated Giant” and “Vice”) and became his theme song. As on all of his Blue Note albums, Doin’ Allright had a terrific lineup: a young Freddie Hubbard (who had just taken over for Lee Morgan in The Jazz Messengers) on trumpet, Horace Parlan on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Al Harewood on drums.
